Hi, welcome to Bill Turnbull's Quiz Site.

I'm now retired having worked in engineering and the licensed trade.
For many years I have written quizzes for my local pubs etc. More recently I have written a monthly quiz for a local magazine. I have also been submitting quizzes to www.quiz4free.com. Jim, the owner of the site has kindly built me a site offering free quizzes for anyone wanting questions for a pub/club quiz. You can also use these questions for a quiz at home.

I'll tell you a bit more about myself. I have been writing quizzes for over 25 years the one I have just finished is number 818 for my local pub, and I have written other quizzes for other establishments, I also have a quiz published in a local monthly magazine.

It all began after a few friends and I had been to a few quizzes and enjoyed them. So we began taking turns writing one for our own amusement in a local club on a Friday night. Other people in the club wanted to join in so we decided we would charge them a pound for charity, no-one objected and we ended up having a large monthly quiz on a Friday night with a hundred questions on ten different subjects, we announced the subjects beforehand and the teams would register one of the rounds as their Joker round where they would get double points. I no longer have copies of these quizzes as the computer I wrote them on went bang.

With the money we collected we went to a local old folks home, and asked them is there anything they could do with to make their lives a bit better, we were thinking about carpet bowls, but the matron said if you had enough money could you get a public address system so that they could all hear the bingo numbers, We thought that this was a wonderful idea we went to one of the people (a local builder) who was coming to the quiz and he arranged to get us one for cost and he also installed it free and built a desk type affair to run the bingo from, they were over the moon, we carried on for a while and gave them a Christmas party all paid for by the money raised from the quizzes.

Then one of my co-conspirators went back to Ireland and the other one did not want to carry on. My local pub had a quiz on a Sunday night and after I had won the jackpot six weeks in a row the landlord barred me from the quiz but he did buy me two pints to keep away from the quiz Shortly after his quiz master gave it up (I think he had bought a quiz book and had been right through it) and the landlord asked me if I would write a quiz for him, as I was in a Sunday quiz league at the time I said I would write the quiz but he would have to get someone to read it. The landlord has gone now but I am still writing the quiz it has gone through several stages from 30 questions to 40, several different formats all designed to keep the people interested, I even had a quiz one week where I managed to get most of the competitors surnames into the answers, not too hard as there is a Chandler and a Farthing among them.

The secret to writing a good pub quiz is to keep it interesting so they keep coming back.

Happy Quizzing Bill
